Ice Fishing On Buck Lake

Over the past month or so we’ve made a couple of trips out to Buck Lake to visit my parents and do a little ice fishing!

Mike had never been ice fishing before this winter, and it’s been a LOOOOOONG time for me (which is kind of sad, considering my mum and dad live right by the lake, but anyway) so we were both pretty excited.

The first weekend was fun but fairly uneventful, as we didn’t even SEE a fish the entire time we were there.

Well, no matter.  We were back again last weekend and this time we saw fish (a few pike, to be specific) but they just were not that interested in eating.  Or we were doing it wrong.  I don’t claim to be an expert on these things, don’t let my best fishing shoes fool you, I am new at this.

We did stay toasty warm in my dad’s ice tent, with an outdoor heater and thermos’ filled with hot chocolate!

If you’ve never been in an ice fishing tent before, it’s quite the experience. If you clear the snow from the ice around the tent, inside the tent, the ice seems to glow from the outside light, and we could see right to the bottom of the lake, even in 8 feet of water. My dad also have a fish camera that we lowered down an outside hole, aimed at our hooks. We saw two pike via the camera, and that was extremely cool!

We will be headed back to the lake in February to give it another go. With any luck the fish may be biting next time!
