New Gear: Soto OD-1R Micro Regulator Stove

While it’s not technically *my* stove, in the strictest sense, while I was shopping at MEC today with Danny, he picked up the Soto OD-1R Micro Regulator Stove and said I could use it!  Hooray!

The OD-1R won an Editor’s Choice Award from both Backpacker and Outdoor Magazine in 2010. Weighing in at just 2.6 oz, it’s considered a champion among stoves designed for cold weather and high altitude use. The manufacturer claims that an 8 oz canister will last for 1.5 hours with this stove, and I assume that means at maximum output (which is 2800 kcal/h 3260w 11000 BTU).

It’s stability and durability remain to be seen, but I expect good things from this little stove. Thus far I am a huge fan of my trusty Pocket Rocket, but it’s always important to try new things. Hopefully we get to test this stove out during our upcoming weekend trip into the backcountry!
